Diabetic neuropathy is damage to the nerves which happens as a result of diabetes. It is thought that diabetes damages the nerves due to prolonged increased blood sugar levels. Therefore, the nerves can tingle, ache or go numb.

People should know that there are different kinds of diabetic neuropathy such as proximal neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, and focal neuropathy.

Diabetic Neuropathy and Its Different Types

Diabetic Focal Neuropathy

This type impacts a certain area or nerve at any site in our body.

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

This type damages the peripheral nerves, usually the nerves of the legs and feet.

Diabetic Autonomic Neuropathy

This type impacts the autonomic nervous system, that is the nerves that control the functions of the body. For instance, it can impact the nerves of the vascular, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems.

Diabetic Proximal Neuropathy

This type impacts the nerves in the buttocks, thighs, and hips.

How to Treat Diabetic Neuropathy

The most important thing is to keep the blood glucose levels within safe limits. Just by keeping our blood sugar levels in the normal range, we will prevent the symptoms from getting worse.

Exercise Regularly

Remember that exercising is a must. By exercising we will keep the blood flowing, and that will keep the symptoms at bay. Exercise will not only help with neuropathy but will also help with different areas of diabetes.

As a matter of fact, even walking can help a lot. In case we choose walking, we must remember to wear comfortable shoes. Also, we need to bear in mind to check our feet for sores and blisters from time to time.

Take Care of Our Feet

Taking proper care of our feet is vital. Neuropathy can cause our legs and feet to go numb. Moreover, we might not notice that we have an open sore or infection until it becomes serious.

In order to prevent this from happening, all we need to do is to make sure that we have clean feet. Also to check our feet regularly.

Stay Hydrated and Consult Our Doctor

Drinking plenty of water is vital. It’s like that since dehydration can allow our body to dip into skin and tissue for the water it needs.

People need to consult their doctor and do what he or she says. We must make sure to take any prescribed drugs as our doctor told us. If things are not clear to us, we should feel free to ask our doctor about it.
