According to a recent study, those who have type 2 diabetes have a good reason to consume protein.

The researchers at the CSIRO, i.e. Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization made a diet that is composed of low carbs with high amounts of unsaturated fats and protein.

The principal research scientist, associate professor Grant Brinkworth notes that this diet is different from the rest we already know. According to Brinkworth the traditional approaches of diet for the management of type 2 might be outdated.

Grant Brinkworth says that it is necessary to review the current dietary guideline based on the latest scientific evidence to lower the influence of the disease.

More About the Latest Scientific Evidence

The dietary guidelines in regions like Australia, Asia, and America usually have a high-carb, low-fat diet.

Food types with a low GI, i.e., a glycemic index that ranks carbs according to the extent that raises blood glucose after eating are typically recommended for type 2, and managing obesity.

However, the developments in this recent study claim deviation from that idea, saying that adding more unsaturated fats such as soybean and olive oil might be better for people with this condition.

Also, the low-carb diet is flexible and gives room for occasional treats.

More About the Study

This study is co-authored by Manny Noakes and Thomas Wycherley of CSIRO, and Peter Clifton from the University of South Australia.

NCBI, there were 118 participants with type 2 conditions. All of them were either obese or overweight. During a specific period, one group had a low-fat, high-carb diet and another group had a high-fat, low-carb diet.

Nutrition News, both groups notably got fitter. Also, that was similar for both groups. But it was shown that the group with the low-carb diet had improvements in their cholesterol levels, and had more HDL good cholesterol levels.

This is in comparison to the group with a high-carb diet. According to the results of the study people with a low-carb diet were able to terminate their medications.

Brinkworth notes that people with the condition could spend less on drugs, and on addressing the side effects which occur from the drugs.

Current Situation with the Condition in the U.S.

Diabetes mellitus commonly known by the name diabetes is one of the most widespread conditions in the world. In the U.S. it affects around 30.3 million people.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion says that there are 3 common types. And the most common type is type 2. This typically happens when the body cannot properly make insulin.

People who have type 2 can experience kidney damage, slow healing, and low blood glucose also known as hypoglycemia. Extreme cases can lead to serious nerve damage and amputation.

Conclusion

Those who have the condition should consult their doctor and learn how to deal with it. Every new research about the condition is a new step towards better management of it.
