Imagine this. She is a freshman in college, just recently started her adventure. She goes out with friends, has fun, and travels. She is a dreamer and quite an optimist. Plus, she is young and can enjoy her freedom.
There are no boundaries, just freedom. The perfect freedom. But, then one morning she wakes up and knows something is not right. She is extremely exhausted.
However, she ignores it and keeps doing what she does best – enjoys life to the fullest.
Then, the insatiable thirst kicks in, and she starts losing more weight than ever. Now it becomes impossible to ignore.
With the support of her parents, she schedules an appointment with her doctor. Goes there and leaves stunned.
She has to live her entire life with a monster. For reasons still unknown, the beta cells in her pancreas have attacked her immune system. As a result, her body can no longer produce the most important thing that can keep her alive – insulin.
She will have to face the difficulties in dealing with type 1 diabetes.
This monster is diabetes type 1. Even though this young lady has done nothing wrong, she is now lost and broken. She has to learn to deal with a terrifying and unforgiving illness. Now her freedom is gone.
She has to carry a huge burden on her shoulders. As a result, that free spirit is now bound to take constant care of her body. Now, after more than 20 years, she still has to deal with the same illness.
But, most important of all, she has to stay optimistic and keep dreaming.
In addition, she teaches people to become courageous and dedicated. After all, every time she wakes up, she has to stick to a strict schedule to properly manage her condition.
Instead of starting her carefree day, she has to reach for that painful blood sugar tester. She has to prick her finger and wait for the blood results. After breakfast, she injects herself with insulin to stay alive.
Furthermore, as the day progresses, she keeps repeating the same routine, injecting herself 3 more times. Plus, she balances her meals, activity, blood sugar levels – her life.
And, before she goes to bed, she again pricks her finger to check the blood sugar results.
Finally, she goes to sleep hoping that her levels will stay stable during the night and she won’t slip into a hypoglycemic coma.
