Coffee lovers drink coffee to get the much-needed energy boost in the morning. But, we believe that they will be glad to hear that coffee can do much more for their health. It turns out this drink is not only a caffeine fix but a way to keep our eyes healthy. Research shows that coffee can protect the eyes. According to researchers, it might be able to prevent blindness and deteriorating vision caused by retinal degeneration. Retinal degeneration can occur because of diabetes, glaucoma, or aging. To confirm these results, researchers analyzed the impact of the CLA or chlorogenic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant capable of preventing retinal degeneration during animal testing.

How Can Coffee Protect the Eyes?

In every coffee bean, there is from 7 to 9% chlorogenic acid. This acid is also known as CGA- an antioxidant that can provide a huge amount of health benefits including managing blood pressure and weight loss. Since CGA is immensely beneficial for overall health, researchers wanted to see if it could prove useful for preventing the degeneration of vision and hypoxia. The Medical News Today was issued in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. They experimented on mice to see what kind of outcome they could expect from coffee and if it is possible to prevent retinal degeneration. The goal was to focus on the nutritional benefits of coffee, claims Hindustan Times. As a result, different large-scale research followed. This time, however, it was led by the US. The results of the research were issued in the journal European Association. Medownick focused on the effects of coffee on those affected by type 2 diabetes. The researchers concluded that by drinking 3 or more cups of coffee every day, there is a chance that people might be able to decrease their risk of developing this chronic condition. In fact, they could reduce their chance by 37%.

CGA and the Eyes

According to a study from Cornell University, CGA might be able to prevent retinal degeneration. The retina has very light and sensitive nerve cells, and it is situated at the back of the eye. These sensitive cells allow the eyes to organize and receive information that we see. But, they are also prone to hypoxia. This is a condition that causes some parts of the body to become deprived of oxygen. As a result, it can cause some significant damage to these weakened areas. In fact, once the retinas lack oxygen, they receive damage which could lead to potential eye diseases, like diabetic retinopathy. When too much sugar enters the blood, it causes some significant damage to the entire body and the eyes as well. Sometimes, this damage in the blood vessels, in the retina, can cause retinal fluids and blood to start leaking out of the blood vessels. As a result, the retinal tissues could get swollen and affect vision. In the end, the vision will become cloudy. If we don’t treat this problem on time, it can cause additional vision issues. However, it can also lead to a complete loss of sight. The symptoms of this condition are the following:
  • Blurry vision
  • A dark or empty spot in the middle of the vision
  • Seeing spots
  • Problems seeing at night
To avoid this problem from developing, it is best to regularly get eye exams and make sure that our eyes are perfectly healthy.

How to Protect Our Eyes?

There are about seventeen minerals and vitamins that can keep the eyes healthy and reduce the chance of developing these health problems. Therefore, it is immensely important that we take good care of our eyes and reduce the risk of developing these diseases. Finally, we should make sure that we properly take care of our vision, because once it is gone, it might be gone forever.
